Ride Around America

Lee Wonnacott rides his motorcycle more miles in a week or two than most American riders will travel in an entire year. The 68 year old military veteran is a man on a mission, to honor veterans of all generations. He is visiting at least one veteran's memorial in every county of the United States. Reaching more than 3,000 planned stops will mean riding about 200,000 miles - most of it solo and in all types of weather.

As if riding several hundred miles a day isn't difficult enough, Wonnacott does it all while negotiating his way through many health problems. He lost his pancreas to cancer a few years ago and now struggles daily with complications resulting from the surgery - the largest of them being Type 1 diabetes.

Other riders, especially veterans, are invited to come along with Wonnacott. Frequently those riders become part of the story as they share the experiences of a long distance ride or just a short leg to the next town.

Wonnacott's tour days begin by packing a small tent onto his machine and then riding to as many as ten different cities and towns. He photographs veteran's memorials, talks with local citizens about veteran's issues, and stops to view the scenery of America. It's a coast to coast, border to border, motorcycle adventure by a man that refuses to let doctors dictate when, where, and how he will die.
